A little bit about us……

South Downs Ecoscapes was founded by Nick Ward who is proud to have built a strong reputation over the last 20 years. Priding ourselves on delivering work to the highest standards, we work closely with our clients, offering sound advice, building strong client relations.

Based in the heart of the South Downs National park in West Sussex, we operate within Sussex and the surrounding counties of Hampshire and Surrey. For our design services, consultancy and training we operate further afield.

Wildlife, ecology and sustainability is our passion and is deep rooted in all that we do. We believe that whatever space you have, from suburban backyard to large country estate, there is always room for more wildlife.

About Nick…..

Nick formally studied horticulture and arboriculture over twenty years ago and being an eternal student with huge desire to learn, has continued to build an impressive array of experience, training and qualifications. South Downs Ecoscapes was formed through Nicks experience of working within industry from horticulturist, arborist, research tree climber, conservation land manager and wildlife management.

He has trained in garden and landscape design and has trained at the world famous Great Dixter. Additionally, he holds internationally recognised qualifications in permaculture design, training and certification in monitoring and surveying for conservation, including mammals, birds, flora and Phase 1 habitat surveying. Nick is well versed in the use of the National Vegetation Classification, which is backed up by formal training and qualifications in botany.

As a natural progression Nick began teaching subjects focused around the natural world back in 2003 and is never happier seeing people inspired by the wonders of nature. He holds formal qualifications in teaching and outdoor leadership and is an approved trainer through the VETree project and the Ancient Tree Forum.

Having travelled the world, Nick has been lucky enough to have studied plants, trees and wildlife from the jungles of Borneo to the steppe landscapes of Outer Mongolia. He has lead wolf tracking expeditions in the frozen forests of Northern Poland and travelled across the High Arctic of Scandinavia but his greatest passion is for the English countryside, landscapes and all that inhabit.
